Ok, well I just got back from Italy and boy are my arms tired! No? Fine.

I started a new ad campaign for iHelp Austin, a series of drawings revolving around the idea that "You might need iHelp if..." Fine, it's a little Jeff Foxworthy-ish, but it's interesting and combines my love of crappy drawings and mocking idiots.

I finally bought a domain for my personal blog with Britt. We were running a mobileme iWeb site but now we have an official name: www.rothyourfaceoff.com. If you wanna see trip photos, or know WHY I'm writing this from a hotel room around the corner from my house (don't get your hopes up, it has nothing to do with swinging or prostitution), check it out.

Lastly, after the decline of Austin Enchilada, all of my kvetching about food had no where to go. Then I started AteTX.com. It's a comedy blog with food reviews only. What I mean is, if you're looking for someone to avidly explain "how the saffron in the soup delicately plays on the tongue, while the liver chunks fill the rest of your mouth in a quaff of organy-gaminess," look somewhere else. If you wanna know how a drink, "was like having a sugar-glazed ham jump-kick you in the liver then throw ginger ale in your face to cool you off," then you have come to the right place.

I have also gotten into being a "aquahobbyist." That means fish nerd. I have a 29 gallon freshwater tank and an 8 gallon nano reef saltwater tank. Maybe I'll post another entry about it. I should really update this more often.

As you know, my animation contract ended in June. Two weeks later I found myself working at Precision Camera as a photoshop artist. Shortly after that I became a food critic for austinenchilada.com. Shortly after that Rick and Meryl talked me into putting my apple help on craigslist. Shortly after that I signed up to help Primizie cater their weddings and corporate events, after meeting Patrick, the catering director, on a wine tour with Britt and the Clink girls.

I was fucking busy.

But my apple help started to pick up, and the guy in charge of austinenchilada.com flaked, and the work environment at Precision was less than conducive to a normal work place, if not down right disastrous. So I put in my two weeks with Precision and they fired me because "I was trying to screw them," but that's what the two week notice was for AND I was still in my 90 trial period.

So I went to Alaska with Britt's family and when I came back I hit the ground running on iHelp Austin.

I ordered business cards, came up with a logo, made a website in iWeb, redesigned the business cards and ordered a new batch, printed and hung fliers at local businesses and I have just paid for ad space in a neighborhood newspaper that hit 71,000 readers a month and the Jewish Outlook.

New Orleans Trip

Sooooooooooooo I haven't updated this in forever and I promised to talk about my trip to New Orleans. Due to the fact that I will be out of a job soon (my contract at Powerhouse ends in the middle of May) I shall leave out a bunch of the gory details. If you know me, you've probably heard them anyway. Here's the basic run-down:

I went to NOLA to visit Canaan and it just so happened to be the first weekend of Mardi Gras. Krewes de Vieux just so happened to party it's way under Canaan's balcony on Royale St. Which was badass because we got to throw beads at people. Unfortunately for the story, the only nudity witnessed was some fat kid (and I point no fingers of shame, I swear) who lifted up his shirt for someone down the street. I would have preferred to have been inside during those awkward few seconds. Fortunately I don't totally remember it, as I was distracted by launching beads up into the air, and letting them casually fall onto strangers in the crowd. We did a lot of drinking and met/saw a lot of bizarre people. I had a great time. Britt flew me down for the weekend after Ian and Chad bailed on the road trip. Thanks SW Travel Points!

I shall update the flicker photos and post a link.

Other news? I downloaded some podcasts, Craig sent me back the hard drive so I'll have a ton of new movies and shows, and I'm celebrating Passover right now. Hooray Matza Pizza!

I believe in the paranormal. I know for a fact that Britt's brother has come back and messed with us. The other night I heard a tapping on the wall (Super Edgar Allen Poe right?), and I waited to see if it stopped on it's own. It did NOT sound like the house creaking or some animal in the wall. It sounded like someone tapping on the wall. After about a minute of having it keep me awake, I waived my hand near the wall and said, "Stop please." And it stopped. I have not heard it since.

The other day at work, the sound guy turned around and (apparently) saw a tall guy in all black standing over me, watching what I was animating. I didn't believe him, but Dean (the guy that sits next to me) and I have frequently felt like someone is standing behind us. A lot.

So today, both Dean and myself saw someone come through the sound room door. That's not so weird. People come in and out all the time to talk to Charles about sound effects, or to use the bathroom. There is another way, but people like the short cut. I turned around to see who it was. There was nobody there, yet I clearly saw someone come through. All three exits from my desk are visible, and have some form of "walkway" before you can leave the room. I asked Dean if he saw anybody and he replied, "Yeah, that tall guy in all black?"

The other guys confirmed that NOBODY had gone in or out of the room in the past 10 minutes. It was pretty creepy, but after my experience with Brandon, I said outloud, "You are more than welcome to share this space with us. Just please don't mess with anything. Thank you." I was hoping that would be the end of it, aside from the occasional lurking shadow walking into the room. Oh my friends, it was not.

I went back to work and decided to listen to "The Grey Album," which is a remix of Jay Z's "Black Album" and The Beatles "White Album." On the second song, "What More Can I Say" I heard the volume turn down (as if someone had lowered it so I could hear them), then some garbled electronic poor quality audio of someone speaking, and then the volume returned to normal. I thought it was weird, but maybe something happened when I brought the music over, and it's its an MP3, I should be able to hear it again. No. No I didn't. Thinking back on it the mumbling sounded something like, "I'm not here to hurt you" or "I'm not going to hurt you."

Thanks to my headphones, I was the only one that heard it. I said, "Thank you for sharing that with me," but to be honest, it scared the shit out of me. It sounded a lot like an EVP recorded by Vicki Talbot. I have never heard an EVP in person before, nor have I claimed to. I just hope I was right about hearing, "I'm not here to hurt you."

We went to the Home and Garden show over the weekend. I saw this amazing fish tank that had rounded edges so it was one piece of glass along the front. My parents have one similar to that but this was well lit and full of fat goldfish. Anyway, I reminded me of the discussion Britt and I had about getting a fish tank for one of the shelves by the kitchen. I was all set to get a big fish tank and then I found out Britt never really wanted one. So we compromised and I got Pretty Boy Floyd. He's pretty chill. He likes: the live plant in his tank, having his picture taken, and food. Sounds a lot like me. Yikes.

The SD Association has announced a new card spec dubbed SDXC (eXtended Capacity) that can support memory capacities up to 2TB with read/write speeds to 104MB per second.

According to their calculations, that would mean you could store 100 high-def movies, 60 hours of HD recording, or 17,000 fine-mode photos on a portable device. Again, keep in mind that this is spec at this point—not an actual product. But we could see something based on it as early as next year. Obviously, there aren't many devices out there that could make full use of it right now, but a card with this kind of capacity and bus speeds could pull the industry forward.

And it's coming out in March. That means that, theoretically by 2010, you could have a server the size of your fist.

My cousin Jessica used to have this for the NES and every Rosh Hashona the younger cousins would run upstairs to the attic to play Blades of Steel, ride the exercise bike (one cousin per pedal) and put "Centerfold" on repeat on the record player. Day 2 - Masada, Dead Sea, The Old City

I was up at 5:45 thanks to jet lag, which was good because our day started pretty early. At 8:30 Roy picked us up and we headed for Masada, a mountain where 900 Jews fought off 15,000 Roman soldiers for 2 years before inevitably being annihilated leaving only one of them alive to tell the story. Roy had not planned this out as smoothly as he could have, and forgot that we would pass the Dead Sea on our way to Masada and then Jerusalem. He planned a half day at the Dead Sea later in the week. He beat himself up about it for half an hour, which was hilarious.

We spent about 30 minutes at the Dead Sea. Britt walked in, and I washed my face with the water. Guess what? It still feels like gasoline and burns like rubbing alcohol. Britt really wanted to go in, but we didn't have our bathing suits, because we had planned this for another day. After a small frolick in a lake at the lowest point on earth, we jumped in the car and headed for Masada.

When I went to Masada 11 years ago, there was no cable car. I hiked up it, at 3 in the morning, for two hours so I could see the sunrise over Jordan and the Dead Sea. I didn't have a choice. But, we rode the cable car and walked around the whole top of the mountain and knock it out in under an hour. Technology win. It took the Roman's 2 years to get up there.

On our way to Jerusalem, Britt wanted to ride a camel. In our pre-trip emails to Roy, her three "must-see's" were the Dead Sea, Masada and riding a camel in the desert. Guess what? We saw an Arab market on the side of the road, and he let Britt ride the camel around the parking lot. Pretty snazzy if you ask me. All she really wanted was to say she rode a camel in the desert, but I think if we had gone on a camel trip through the desert, the magic of these great humped creatures would be replaced by the realization that they are disgusting animals.

We were off to Jerusalem. We saw the Wailing Wall, where all the ultra-orthodox Jews sit and pray all day. I felt a strong connection to it in '97, but this time I said my prayer and was like, "Let's go get some falafel!" I could have been distracted by all the kids running around, since they had just gotten out of school. We walked through a maze of tourist traps, little shops with owners that say something to you in English, then try to persuade you to "come in and look" once you've made eye contact. I told Britt not to respond to anybody speaking English to her unless she knew them. This prevents us blatantly looking American and avoids the whole, "Ooh, sorry, I have to go" situation. It's the same reason you sneak out in the middle of the night after a one night stand. Or so I've heard.

Then Roy dragged us around some more side streets to a place that had AMAZING falafel. The stuff we get in America is Egyptian falafel. Israeli falafel has different spices and is the size of a walnut nut not a hockey puck. I like it a lot more. After a brief and seriously late lunch, we headed to the Jewish fruit market. You can get a kilo of avacados for 4 sheckels. That's like 1.5 cents for 3 avocados. Remarkable. After that, he took us to see his old apartment building and I saw, what I believe to be, a Banksy piece of graffiti. After that we went back to his place in Tel Aviv and watched his Holocaust Film. It's pretty awesome. We checked out his neighborhood bar...I had a grilled cheese and a Goldstar beer.

Our First Day in Israel

Our friend Roy picked us up at the airport after several long flights: Austin to Chicago, Chicago to Madrid, Madrid to Tel Aviv. I think the Iberia Airlines stewardess was anti-semetic because as soon as she saw us (thanks to my necklace and Britt's tattoo), she acted like she didn't care for us. We were virtually ignored the whole flight. I only had 2 glasses of water on a 9 hour flight. Needless to say, I was f*cking thirsty when I got off in Madrid. I had some water and had another ambien to snooze through that flight also. Before you know it, our 18 hour ordeal was over and we were in Israel. This photo was taken at dinner with Roy and Hagit. The internet is acting up in this room so I'm using some random wifi called "shivas" and sometimes I switch to "default" or "wireless" to continue the cycle. We're switching rooms later so I will be able to upload our photos to flickr and you can see them all.

Super Mario World

I downloaded Super Mario World on my Wii today. I haven't played that game in years, but I have spent a significant amount of time beating all "96 levels of non-stop action!" It was something fun to play when I needed a break from the games that stressed me out in middle school and high school. I think it's one of the best mario games ever.

But what I find fascinating, is that after all these years, I STILL remember where all the secrets and hidden keys are. However, I have forgotten the capital of Michigan. But who gives a shit right? It's Michigan.

New Eminem Song

So I know it's kind of cheesy to be all stoked about a new Eminem Album, but I am afraid to say, I really like his stuff. This new song, "Number One", is an indication of a presumably more mature album of his previous sophomoric and violent stuff. Although I do have to admit that "Drug Ballad" is my favorite song he has ever written.

I was going to blog about something else but I totally forgot. Eh, must not have been that important.

Although I do think stuff like this cheapens the awesomeness of our first black president. It's a really significant event that proves maybe all of the hype about "you can achieve anything in America" is true. Only 144 years ago, slavery was abolished in the US (barring human trafficking and the sex trade business, but follow me on this) and now we have our first black president. I think it's pretty amazing.

So we had a giant yard sale the yesterday and Britt and I made over $450. Having sold the table that we previously set up here , we headed over to IKEA and got 2 chairs, a table, a rug, the balls that are in the bowl, and some new drinking glasses. Fortunately for us, our yard sale paid for everything, which is totally badass.

I'm sitting in the Atlanta airport waiting for my Korean Air flight to Tampa, Florida for thanksgiving listening to the new Guns 'N Roses album, Chinese Democracy. Interesting.

The album isn't that bad. I downloaded it for free so I enjoy it a little bit more. Plus I'm running on 4ish hours of sleep, so it could be the exhaustion. All I know is that I will sleep like a bastard tonight! Boarding...

USA Skull

I brought the skull into photoshop and added some brush work. This was a request by my friend Canaan. He better use it as his desktop at work.

Flash Illustration

So I start at Powerhouse in January, and they do everything in flash. I decided to illustrate this skull in Flash using the pen tool. I'm used to doing this kind of work in Illustrator, and to be honest, I prefer it. But I'm glad to have started using Flash again. Maybe now I'll tweak the animation in my thesis. But I need to finish the Juno Title Sequence first. I'll have that up soon. I gotta take the dogs for a walk now.

New Haircut, New Kicks

Today Britt and I celebrated our 8 month anniversary (post marriage) by going to a giant play-land in Round Rock. They had unlimited video games, pizza, putt-putt, go karts, batting cages, bumper boats and some other stuff. We just played putt-putt and some videos games because we really only wanted to play putt-putt but who can pass up free play on House of the Dead 2? The place was LITTERED with kids. I guess I'd be stoked to go to a place like that when I was 10, but it was kind of annoying being there now. We let 5 different groups of kids play through us on the putt-putt course because Britt didn't want to be rushed. We don't really make a big deal out of the month anniversaries but we might go out for dinner or something small like that.

On our way home, we stopped so I could get a haircut. It was pretty terrible, but I just wanted something for Thanksgiving because Britt said I needed one. You can check out my old doo here. Anyway I got the same cut I had before but I got it at TGF Haircuttery. Yeah. Big mistake. Anyway, after I walked out, I was like, "F*ck this" and asked the woman to just buzz it. I kinda wanted it anyway, but Britt liked the old style, so I tried to get that.

Then I came home and got on Zappos.com. Most of the kicks that I have smell. I got these DC's and another pair of chocolate slip-on chucks, because the ones I have now have a huge hole in the left shoe...and I doubt they are supposed to last 2 years anyway. I accidentally order the shoes before I could change the shipping time. I really wanted them before thanksgiving. That's what I did 2 years ago, and it was awesome to rock the new kicks in St. Pete. So I called Zappos and they are going to have them here Monday instead of 4-5 days from now, for free. One day shipping absolutely free. Awesome. The lesson here? If you know your shoe size, order off Zappos.

It's been a pretty good day. Now I'm going to work out and watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding. (nope, no link)

Crazy 8 months

Today I have been married for 8 months today. It's been interesting for sure. In that time we got a house, Britt got a new car (new to her anyway), Britt got a job at Austinwoman Magazine, I got a job as an Associate Producer, STOCK MARKET CRASH, I'm laid off, Britt's let go so the boss's BFF can take her place, I start doing some real freelance editing, Obama wins, Britt's dad and I seem to hit our stride and enjoy hanging out with each other, we're going to Israel in a few weeks for my friend Roy's wedding, I accepted a position as an animator at Powerhouse Studios starting in January, I finally got some pieces of a website I wanted to make up and running, started Nutrisystem, became a vegetarian, basically stopped drinking and lost about 12lbs (so far).

Crazy 8 months.
